Since 1970, H. T. Harvey & Associates has provided both public agencies and private companies with expert ecological consulting services. Our business mission is to furnish our clients with sound scientific information as the basis for making responsible decisions involving land use and resource management.
We serve our clients from our California offices in San Jose, Fresno, Sacramento, and Arcata. While the majority of our work occurs in California, we also have projects in progress worldwide, ranging from Alaska’s Prince William Sound to Antarctica’s Ross Sea (www.penguinscience.com).

At H. T. Harvey & Associates we pride ourselves in employing highly trained ecologists. Our company has a reputation for its wide range of ecological expertise. Our staff includes experts in the full range of biological disciplines necessary to address the needs of our clients. With over 400 peer-reviewed scientific publications, our staff expertise is widely recognized. Our senior scientists average at least 20 years of experience in their respective disciplines. Our graphic arts department complements the work of these scientists with their own expertise and our company’s full Geographic Information System (GIS) capabilities.

The products we provide to our clients include:

  • Environmental Impact Analyses

  • Endangered and Special-Status Species Studies and Consultations

  • Wetland Delineations and Expert Consultations

  • Restoration Design

  • Landscape Architecture

  • Permit Applications and Processing

  • Ecological Research

  • Conservation and Park Planning

We have successfully completed well over four thousand projects for a clientele balanced between federal, state and local agencies, as well as for private clients. Our research is funded through grants from the National Science Foundation, NOAA, private research foundations, and other entities.

Our professional work began in 1970, when H. T. Harvey & Associates was founded by a group of ecology professors as an outlet to conduct research and consulting projects. One of these founders, pioneer wetlands ecologist, the late Dr. H. Thomas Harvey, became the company president and our company’s namesake. Several of these original early professors still consult through our company as Associates.

Dr. Harvey was part of a team of research ecologists studying the Giant Sequoia in the 1970’s. This ten-year study clarified the role of fire in the ecology of the species, and revolutionized forest management for Giant Sequoia groves. During the winters and springs, Dr. Harvey turned his attention towards salt marsh ecology of the San Francisco Bay. He was instrumental in the founding of the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, was a pioneer in marsh restoration, and served as the biological advisor to the Bay Conservation and Development Commission for over twenty years.

As landmark environmental legislation was created in the early 1970’s, the early consulting work of our company grew considerably. Accordingly, over the last 30 years the staff at H. T. Harvey & Associates has grown, as has our level of service. Our President, Ron Duke, a noted wildlife and wetlands ecologist, took over for Dr. Harvey in 1990. Mr. Duke, together with Principals Scott Terrill (ornithology and wildlife), Dan Stephens (restoration ecology), and Pat Boursier (botany and wetlands), lead a staff of over 40 ecological experts.

Today, we provide a full range of environmental services. We prepare biological sections of EIRs, prepare mitigation plans, move projects through the wetland permitting process, and monitor those mitigations. Along the way, we deal with any endangered species issues that may arise. Our research activities allow our staff to remain current with the most up-to-date science, which they apply to difficult natural resource management issues.
