Candlestick Point-Hunters Point Shipyard

The Candlestick Point–Hunters Point Shipyard Phase II Development project is a mixed-use development on 702 acres east of US 101, in the southeast area of the City of San Francisco. The project includes residential, retail, office, research and development, civic, and community uses, as well as parks and recreational open space containing habitat improvements and thousands of new trees. New transportation and utility infrastructure, including a bridge across Yosemite Slough, will serve the project.

H. T. Harvey & Associates served as the lead biological consultant to Lennar Urban throughout the planning phase. Using our considerable knowledge of parks and open space plans, habitat enhancement measures, and wildlife habitat associations, we provided extensive technical input regarding biological resources. We supported the planning team and the consultant preparing the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) by providing detailed information on existing biological conditions, impacts, and mitigation measures. Our team made several presentations at public meetings regarding the project’s effects (including enhancements) on biological resources. Because of the project’s controversial nature and its decades-long planning process, the EIR won the American Planning Association’s 2012 “Hard Fought Victory” award.

For this project, our team of ecologists also performed a delineation of wetlands and other waters of the U.S./state and conducted a tree survey. Our work on this project continues—we provide ongoing assistance with EIR compliance, spearhead regulatory agency permitting, and consult on special-status species issues.
