Staff Accountant

We invite experienced accounting professionals who are interested in supporting innovative ecological projects to apply for a staff accountant position with us. The anticipated salary for this exempt position is $79,500–$88,000. Actual compensation within the range will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and location of employment. This position can be based out of one of our California offices (Los Gatos, Fresno, Folsom, Arcata), performed remotely from other parts of the United States during regular U.S. West Coast business hours, or a hybrid of remote and in-office work. H. T. Harvey & Associates is an ecological consulting firm based in the San Francisco Bay Area, with more than 80 people working out of our Los Gatos, Fresno, Folsom, Arcata, and Hawaii offices, as well as remotely. We have been cultivating excellence in our staff in pursuit of our mission to create ecologically sound solutions to our clients’ complex natural resource challenges for more than 50 years. Our core areas of expertise are wildlife ecology, plant ecology, aquatic ecology, restoration ecology, and landscape architecture. The business management group leads the company’s human resources, health and safety, finance and accounting, IT, marketing and communications, business operations, technical support, and GIS services.

What this job entails

Initial primary responsibility will be client invoicing, AP, and payroll. The position has room for growth and expansion into other aspects of accounting. While our billing and AR process is on a routine monthly cycle, the nature of the work is anything but routine—our clients range from public sector agencies to private companies, to research institutions, all with different billing requirements. You’ll have direct access to and work with both accounting team leaders and company leadership on a regular basis.

Experience, competencies, and skills

The ideal candidate has more than 5 years of prior accounting experience. The successful candidate would enjoy a balance of predictable and unpredictable work, possess a strong eye for detail, be exceptionally organized, effectively prioritize clear and responsive communication, and have a proactive nature about completing work tasks and meeting deadlines.

Other experience, skills, and competencies for this position include:

  • Hands-on experience with professional services-oriented accounting software, ideally Deltek Ajera
  • Knowledge of
    • finance principles and practices related to project accounting
    • full cycle AR and AP
    • GAAP compliance
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to follow specific billing guidelines precisely
  • A proactive and persistent approach to getting information needed to complete a task
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • B.S. or B.A from an accredited institution or AA degree with specific training or certification in accounting
